Tasmania is seldom regarded as a state that is subject to severe drought. The past 3 years however have presented Tasmania's farmers, especially in the southern midlands and on the east coast, with the worst drought in living memory.
Farmers have been forced to sell large numbers of stock, provide very expensive supplementary feed to remaining stock, leave cropping land in fallow or watch their crops die, see dams and irrigation supplies dry up and still provide their families with a livelihood.
Many farmers have been forced to sell their farms due to financial hardship as well as emotional hardship. The conditions experienced by many of Tasmania's drought affected farmers have created a feeling of despair. Depression is a constant battle for some and this is made worse by the climatic conditions as well as the financial conditions on farms.
When the drought breaks, the tough times will not be over. Farms are low on stock numbers, essential for cash flow, and the impact of this will be reflected in the finances for years following.
It is of utmost importance that the help being provided to farmers at present does not stop. There are many organisations that are providing assistance on the ground and their resources need replenishing.
